Faye: Are you straight edge?
James: Yeah, I firmly believe you can be straight edge and gamble a lot. I mean, Bane was a straight edge band for a while, their singer was straight edge and they have songs that mention poker and gambling and all that stuff. Gambling has definitely made my life better, sometimes it’s made me want to kill myself, but for the most part, it’s made it a lot better. I wouldn’t say gambling is abusing my mind whatsoever. So, I consider myself as straight edge as you can get.
Faye: Why are you straight edge?
James: Because I tried drinking and smoking at a young age, and I wasn’t really into it, but a lot of people I was around were and then I somehow stumbled into a hardcore show and learned about it from there. My dad’s an alcoholic, well, he’s a recovering alcoholic and I’ve seen him at his worst, and I knew I never wanted to be like that, so I just want to be as far away from that stuff as possible. Plus, I see the dudes I’m in a band with and they’re all drunk all the time – no disrespect to them, because I love them, they’re my best friends, but when I see our guitarist retardedly drunk, I just thank God I’m straight edge. [laughs] I mean, it’s all in good fun.

IE: Everyone in the band is straight edge but from reading your lyrics it is not something that you seem to push on the listener. In fact you guys seem to come off with more of a punk rock rebellious type of vibe. Would you agree with this?

Matt: At heart, I'm a punk rocker. A studded leather wearing, mohawk having, boot stomping punk rocker. To me, straight edge is the ultimate form of rebellion. Alcohol is the most mainstream form of submission. It's kick back and drink up or X up and fight back. I don't always write about straight edge in my lyrics because I feel like there are so many amazing bands past and present who have that topic so well-covered that I'm not needed. I do talk about it sometimes, like in the song “Blur” and a couple other vague references, but it's not my main focus. I just bump No Tolerance while I write about different issues pertaining to my friends and I.

Right Direction is a Hardcore band from Maastricht / The Netherlands.
They started in 1989 and disbanded in 2008. 4 original members reunited in 2010 to do more shows in the future. No intentions to record new material though...

In 1990 the band began touring with Gorefest which shows that their sounds does not only appeal to the hardcore punk audiences, but also has strong ties with the metalscene. During this time they releae two EP’s on the underground label “Worst of All” and can be found as support acts for bands such as Excel, Yuppicide, Sick Of It All, In 1992 the drummer Richard Bruinen quits the band and can later be found performing in the band Backfire!.
1993 is the year of their first full length album “How Many More Lies”. They tour Europe with Madball, Beowulf and Warzone. A second full lenght is released in 1995 called “All of a Sudden”. In the fall of this year the band splits up after having toured with Slapshot and Bitter.

Heros & Zeros

"Heros & Zeros has been around in various line-ups since 1998. It started out as a side project of members from Amsterdam based old school hardcore bands Soberesponse and Vitamin X (legendary Holland Straight Edge band). At that time the band was playing a more hardcore-punk influenced style of Oi!"

Who are the band members and how does your daily life look like?
Here we go: Marko is our singer, Anna plays bass, RC drums, Boban plays trumpet and Mali and I play guitar. We all got jobs: RC is fireman, Mali works in a library and Boban is sound engineer. Marko is, besides his job also busy with his other band Vitamin X.

Some of the band members have a SxE background. Isn’t it a big swerve to form a streetpunk band?
It isn’t really possible is it? But actually Marko is the only one who still keeps his hands of alcohol, for the rest of the band it s already history. Also for Marko there will be no help, also he had to start, but right now he doesn’t make headway.
When it comes to the music it s for sure something different, but everyone in the band has a different taste, different influences and a different background. I think this all comes back into our sound. You can still here the hardcore-influences. We re not really a band who shouts Oi! in every song or only sings about beer. But in the end we re still just herberts.
